One day I realized I was obsessed, and to those who didn't sew, I sounded like a crazy person. I mean, people can get interested for a second when you tell them you made your pants, but you can tell you are losing them when you start to get into details about your bar tacks and how this time you tried a different sewing order to get a more even outcome.

So after determining over a year ago that I would no longer purchase commercial clothing and make everything I wore, and realizing how much joy I got from reading about and talking about sewing, I figured it was time to stop bugging those that probably don't care and put it out there in case someone wanted to read about my adventures. I know we are always learning, sometimes the same lesson over and over again, unfortunately, and I hope you enjoy reading and finding out what I am into this weekend.

Just to be clear, I work full-time and love my job, and this is my hobby. I'm a scientist by training and I love thinking about how things fit together. I think because I spend so much time on ideas or on long term projects, I need to have an outlet that results in something more tangible and has a more 'instant gratification' outcome.

Why not a seamstress?

While I never liked the term, it always makes me thing of people that make gowns. I don't do that, I make clothes for every day.

Then one day we were at the local fabric store and I was looking for some Wonder Tape. They were out, but the store showed that they should have some in stock. As she went to go check the back, she asked me why I even needed it. I explained that it helped me when sewing collar stands on to shirts, to keep everything in place. She said

Honey, I'm a seamstress, I don't use glue.

As soon as she walked away, I turned to my husband and said

Well, I'm a sewist, and I will use any tool that keeps me from crying over a ruined project.
